  1. Independent Research Project

    Description: Individual student report on Fuel controversy, certified by an adult to be a suitable challenge. Suggested topics: Controversies over Oil, Gasoline, Natural Gas, Propane, Peak Oil, Oil Companies in 3rd World Countries, Wars over Oil, Colonialism,

    Deliverable: Word doc, including header with name, date, age/grade level, title.

    State Standards: English, Social Studies, Communication

  2. Historical Time-Line of Fuel (Age: 7 - 18)

    Description: Students in each class or multiple classes together each find out one piece of information about Fuel usage in a different time, place and culture.

    Deliverable: Information is made into large time-lines suitable for school hallways, with single-page explanation essays connected to dates. Banner must hang in a public area.

    State Standards: English, Social Studies, Communication

  3. Chemistry: Popping a Methane Bubble (Age: 13-18)

    Description: Most schools have methane spigots in the science classrooms. Use a viscous polymer to create giant methane bubbles and combust them in the classroom!

    Deliverable: Science Lab Writeup from each student. Video and Photographic Evidence encouaged.

  4. Political Science: Oregon's Liquid Natural Gas Pipeline (Age: 13-18)

    Description: Oregon is home to a massive controversy over Fuel delivery and consumption that is emblematic of some of the difficult choices facing our country this Century. Students research and write or debate about this ongoing decision.

    Deliverable: Debate, Essay

    State Standards: Language Arts, Communication, Political Awareness

    Fuel: PDX on Fire Display Option: - Public debate on the mainstage on Saturday

  5. Mathematics: Stoichiometry and Units of Consumption (Age: 13-18)

    Description: Students research fuel consumption units and try to work out comparable consumption units for electric, natural gas, diesel and wood heat.


    Deliverable: 3-5 person team posters explaining a particular comparison visually.
